Bitcoin-backed trading and lending are already taking place on Canton. With CBTC now listed on EDX, eligible institutional clients have a new way to access that asset through a USD spot market. BitSafe and GRT are supporting CBTC’s first centralized-exchange listing, with GRT participating as a liquidity partner.
CBTC/USD spot is the starting point. Planned CBTC/BTC spot trading would give Bitcoin holders a direct market to buy and sell CBTC against BTC; CBTC/USD perpetuals would add a way to hedge CBTC holdings without selling them and pursue spot–perpetual funding strategies.
Bitcoin for trading, lending and more
CBTC is backed 1:1 by Bitcoin and designed for use in Canton’s financial applications. Canton’s privacy controls let participants transact on shared infrastructure without making every transaction detail public. Distributed reserve control and Chainlink Proof of Reserve support CBTC’s backing and reserve transparency.
Holders can already trade CBTC on Temple or Kora, hold and send it through Loop or Canton Wallet, and supply it to Alpend’s lending market for variable interest. The EDX listing adds an institutional exchange market alongside these on-chain uses.
Trading and lending are the foundation for a broader role for Bitcoin-backed collateral on Canton. As applications adopt CBTC, potential uses include derivatives margin, repo and treasury financing, and structured products.
Supporting the market institutions trade
GRT provides institutional liquidity across centralized and decentralized venues, combining quantitative research, trading infrastructure and execution expertise. GRT will support liquidity across EDX’s CBTC markets, beginning with CBTC/USD spot and extending to the planned CBTC/BTC spot and CBTC/USD perpetual markets as they launch.
A listing creates access; the market available behind it matters just as much. Institutional desks need to assess the prices and size at which they can enter, adjust or exit a position. Liquidity provision supports that activity, making GRT’s contribution a practical part of bringing CBTC to EDX’s users.
As the planned markets launch, desks could pair CBTC holdings with a perpetual hedge, retaining the asset for use on Canton while adjusting their directional exposure.
